Where Tri Rismaharini Went in Silicon Valley?

– Elected Surabaya city mayor, Tri Rismaharini, shared her one-week journey stories in Silicon Valley, San Fransisco, US. She departed from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. After went back to Surabaya, she brought a bunch of stories from the Uncle Sam’s country.

She went there not only to accompany the winner of Startup Sprint Competition, Masaku, but also to bridge the dream of Surabaya as the next startup technology center. “The most important thing is, we look for the most useful and suitable applications for Indonesian people,” she said to Tempo, Wednesday, January 26, 2016.

She highlighted that her visit was not intended to adopt Silicon Valley ecosystem to Surabaya, fully.

Risma explained about the places she visited in the US. Mostly, they were recommended spots for startup businessman, such as Startup Weekend. Startup Weekend creates new technology applications every week. She also came to the F50, one of the well-known startup accelerator. F50 collects funding from around the world for the next startup generation.

“I went to Facebook, Google, and one of the biggest venture capital who will fund startups in Surabaya,” she added, “they will come to Surabaya soon.”

After visited those startup companies, Risma made agreements with other startup accelerator, such as StartX and Global Silicon Valley (GSV). StartX was funded by Stanford University, while GSV was a community which elaborated technology and social problems.

“Startup must not only talk about technology. But also about solving human’s life. I want to build the ecosystem, which integrates all of them,” she explained. Not only creating money, but also promoting change.
